Prioritizing Sustainability

I think we can all agree that the world is a bit crazy at the moment. Just turn on the news or scroll your social media page, and you’ll be met with a barrage of worst-case-scenarios. Especially when it comes to the state of the environment. Global warming, ice caps melting, deforestation… More than ever, we’re all feeling the pressure to do our bit and live a more sustainable life. We always believe in doing our bit at The Madison House of Image. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to help the environment by increasing our sustainability efforts in everything we do.

Why do salons need to make an effort to be more sustainable?

If we’re ever going to help the environment, we need to be doing a lot more than swapping our straws from disposable plastic to reusable metal. Unfortunately, the hairdressing industry comes with a lot of single-use items.

• The industry has a large carbon footprint because of the volume of imperishable waste products, such as cotton wool, shampoo bottles, foils, color tubes, towels and tissues.

• There are a wide range of chemicals being used in the hair industry. Hair dyes, bleaches, peroxides and hair styling agents are all hazardous to the environment.

• Calculations by Eco Hair & Beauty suggest that washing just one customer’s hair per day uses about 14,222 litres of water and 1,252 kWh of energy annually. This works out at a carbon footprint of 500 kg per client, and that’s before you’ve even taken into account the energy used by any blow-drying or styling tools.

The hairdressing industry especially has historically been a big polluter. Between hair dye, heating tools and styling products, there’s plenty of things that end up in landfill. It’s essential that salons stay conscious of the impact they’re having. That’s why we’re always looking for alternatives and initiatives to make ΛLTËRΛ Salon (formerly known as The Madison House of Image) as sustainable as possible (while also delivering the same sensational hair you know + love.)

MATTER OF TRUST - THE CLEAN WAVE PROGRAM

We are happy to be active supporters of The Clean Wave Program here at
ΛLTËRΛ Salon (formerly known as The Madison House of Image). We have had guests ask "what do you do with all of that cut hair at the end of the day?" I used to answer this with a giggle and say "we make sweaters in the back with it" what do you mean what do we do with it?! But then I started to notice more and more conversations and media posts on how beneficial human hair can be to our environment. It was like God was putting this literally in front of my face ! As i researched, I finally came across something that i wanted the salon to be a part of- The Clean Wave Program. What are hair mats used for besides emergency oil spills? A lot! Our hair mats and booms are urban water warriors, filtering and cleaning water in cities, airports, truck stops, and more. They can live inside and around storm drains, under heavy machinery, or can even be used as a thick towel. Preventing soil erosion and protecting natural habitats through sandbagging are two more skills the hair mats and booms have added to their repertoires.Hair mats’ abilities and versatility shine through their routine usage. Hair can absorb 5-7 times its weight in oil. WHY THIS MATTERS? Our goals are to help clean polluted water, to  divert useful fibers from the waste stream, to provide recycling education and create green jobs. We accept donations of hair, fur, wool, fleece… clippings from individuals, salons, groomers, farmers… We sort these into useful stockpiles by length and manufacture felted mats products that soak up petrochemicals in stormdrains, wells, filtration systems, rivers, oceans.
